Yes. Feeling a little sore after a chiropractic adjustment is common, especially after your first few visits. It usually feels like the ache you get after a new workout, shows up within a few hours, and fades within one to two days. Sharp pain, numbness, weakness or soreness that keeps getting worse is not the normal kind, and you should call us or get medical care.

What Normal Soreness After an Adjustment Feels Like

Normal post-adjustment soreness is a dull, achy, muscle-type feeling. Patients often describe it as stiffness or tenderness in the area that was adjusted, similar to how your legs feel the day after you start walking more or go back to the gym.

It tends to stay in the same general area that was treated. If your lower back was adjusted, the ache is usually in your lower back or hips. If your neck was adjusted, you may feel it in your neck, upper shoulders or between your shoulder blades.

Signs it is the expected kind

  • A mild to moderate ache, not a sharp or stabbing pain
  • Tenderness when you press on the muscles near the treated area
  • Some stiffness when you first get up or turn your head
  • It eases when you move gently, walk or apply ice
  • It is a little better each day instead of worse

Some people also feel a bit tired after a session, or notice a mild headache after a neck adjustment. These usually pass within a day as well.

Why an Adjustment Can Leave You Sore

An adjustment moves a joint that has been stiff or restricted. The muscles, ligaments and tissues around that joint have often been guarding it for weeks, months or even years. When the joint starts moving differently, those tissues have to adapt, and that adjustment period can feel sore.

Think of it like stretching a muscle you have not used in a while. Nothing is damaged, but the area is working in a way it is not used to.

Who tends to feel it more

  • First-time patients, because the body has not been adjusted before
  • People with long-standing stiffness or pain that has been building for a long time
  • Patients recovering from an auto injury, where the muscles are already strained and protective
  • People who sit for long hours at a desk or behind the wheel
  • Anyone who goes straight back to heavy lifting or a hard workout after the visit

For many patients, soreness becomes less noticeable after the first few visits as the body gets used to moving better.

How Long Soreness After an Adjustment Usually Lasts

For most people, the timeline looks something like this. Everyone is different, so use it as a general guide, not a rule.

The first few hours

You may feel fine walking out of the office and then notice some achiness later that day or that evening. This delay is normal.

The next morning

Soreness often feels strongest the morning after, especially when you first get out of bed. It usually loosens up once you start moving.

Day two and three

The ache should be fading. By the end of the second or third day, most people feel back to normal or better than before the visit.

If the soreness is still there after three days, or if it is getting worse instead of better, call us. That does not always mean something is wrong, but it is worth checking so we can adjust your care.

Self-Care for the First 48 Hours

A few simple habits can make the day after your adjustment much more comfortable.

  • Ice the area for 15 to 20 minutes at a time, with a thin towel between the ice and your skin. Ice is usually the better choice for the first day.
  • Keep moving gently. A short, easy walk helps more than lying on the couch all day.
  • Skip heavy lifting and intense workouts for the rest of the day. Light activity is fine.
  • Drink water and eat normally. Being well hydrated helps you feel better in general.
  • Watch your posture if you sit for long periods. Get up every 30 to 45 minutes and stretch lightly.
  • Sleep in a supported position. On your back with a pillow under your knees, or on your side with a pillow between your knees, is easier on the lower back.
  • Do the stretches or exercises we give you, and only those. Do not push into pain.

After the first day, some people prefer gentle heat, like a warm shower, to loosen tight muscles. If you want to take an over-the-counter pain reliever, follow the label and check with your doctor or pharmacist first if you have other health conditions or take other medications.

How We Keep Soreness Manageable at Our Clinic

Soreness is common, but it should never be a surprise, and it should never be severe. At Loucil Chiropractic in Ives Estates, Dr. Loucil starts with a full evaluation and a conversation about your history before any adjustment.

From there, care is matched to you. That can mean a gentler approach on the first visit, adding spinal decompression or physical therapy for certain conditions, or working on the surrounding muscles so the joint is not the only thing doing the work.

Most importantly, tell us how you felt after your last visit. If you were very sore, we want to know. That feedback helps us change the technique, the pressure or the pace of your care. You can talk it through with Dr. Loucil in English or Spanish.

When Soreness Is Not Normal: Call Us or Get Care

Most post-adjustment soreness is mild and short-lived. Some symptoms are different and should not be waited out.

Call our office if you notice

  • Soreness that lasts more than three days or keeps getting worse
  • Sharp, stabbing or shooting pain instead of a dull ache
  • New pain that spreads down an arm or leg
  • Tingling or numbness that was not there before
  • Pain that keeps you from sleeping or doing normal daily tasks

Call 911 or go to the emergency room if you have

  • Sudden, severe headache unlike any you have had before
  • Dizziness, trouble speaking, vision changes, or weakness or numbness in the face, arm or leg, especially on one side
  • Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
  • Sudden weakness in the legs, or trouble walking
  • Chest pain or trouble breathing

These symptoms are rare, but they can be serious, and they need emergency care right away. Do not wait to see if they pass.

Who Should Not Get an Adjustment, or Should Check First

Chiropractic care is not the right fit for everyone, and an honest clinic will tell you that. Spinal manipulation may not be appropriate, or may need to be changed or postponed, if you have:

  • Severe osteoporosis or a recent fracture
  • Cancer that affects the bones or spine
  • Signs of spinal cord compression or serious nerve damage
  • An active infection or fever
  • A bleeding disorder, or you take blood thinners
  • A recent stroke, or symptoms that could point to a problem with the blood vessels in the neck
  • Recent spine surgery
  • A flare of inflammatory arthritis in the neck

If any of these apply to you, tell us before your first visit. In many cases there are gentler options, and in some cases the right step is to see your medical doctor or a specialist first. If you were in a car accident, get checked for injuries that need medical care before starting chiropractic treatment.

Questions Patients Ask About Soreness After an Adjustment

Yes. Mild soreness or stiffness is common, especially after your first few visits. It usually starts within a few hours and fades within one to two days.

For most people it lasts one to two days and is usually strongest the next morning. If it lasts more than three days or keeps getting worse, call us.

Ice is usually the better choice for the first day. Use it for 15 to 20 minutes at a time with a towel against your skin. After that, gentle heat such as a warm shower can help loosen tight muscles.

Light activity like walking is helpful. It is best to skip heavy lifting and intense workouts for the rest of the day, then ease back in.

The muscles and tissues around a stiff joint have to adapt when the joint starts moving differently, which can feel sore for a day or two. If you feel sharp pain, numbness, weakness or pain that keeps getting worse, that is not expected. Call us or seek medical care.

A mild headache that fades within a day can happen. A sudden, severe headache, or a headache with dizziness, vision changes, trouble speaking or one-sided weakness, is an emergency. Call 911.

Not necessarily. Some people feel sore and some feel nothing at all. Soreness is not a sign of success or failure. How you feel and move over the following days and weeks matters more.

Usually not. Many patients notice less soreness after the first few visits as the body gets used to moving better. Tell us how you felt after each visit so we can adjust your care.

Soreness can be more noticeable after an auto injury because the muscles are already strained. Make sure you have been checked for injuries that need medical care first, and tell us about any new or worsening symptoms.
