It depends on what is causing your pain, and often the best answer is both. A chiropractor focuses on how your spine and joints move and can bring faster relief from pain and stiffness. A physical therapist focuses on rebuilding strength, flexibility and control so the problem does not keep coming back. Our Ives Estates clinic offers both, so here is an honest look at when each one fits.
The short answer: two tools for different jobs
Chiropractic care and physical therapy overlap more than most people think. Both treat back pain, neck pain and injuries without surgery or long-term medication. The difference is the main tool each one uses and the stage of recovery where it helps most.
- Chiropractor: hands-on spinal and joint adjustments, mobilization and related therapies to reduce pain and restore movement in joints that are stiff or irritated.
- Physical therapist: guided exercise, stretching and movement training to rebuild strength, endurance and balance around the injured area.
A simple way to think about it: chiropractic care often helps you feel and move better sooner, and physical therapy helps you stay better. Neither one is automatically the right answer. The right choice depends on where your pain is coming from.
When a chiropractor is the better first step
A chiropractor is usually a good starting point when pain comes from a joint that is not moving well, especially in the spine. Common signs are stiffness that is worse in the morning, pain that changes with certain positions, and a feeling that your back or neck is "locked."
Problems that often respond well to chiropractic care
- Recent low back pain without numbness or weakness
- Neck pain and stiffness, including headaches that start in the neck
- Mid-back pain from long hours at a desk or behind the wheel
- Some types of sciatica, especially when a joint or tight muscle is irritating the nerve
- Whiplash and soft tissue injuries after a car accident, once serious injury has been ruled out
At our clinic, chiropractic care can also include spinal decompression for certain disc-related problems and Laser Therapy to support healing in irritated tissue. Not every patient needs these. The exam decides what fits.
When physical therapy is the better first step
Physical therapy tends to lead when the main problem is weakness, poor control or lost function rather than a stiff joint. If your pain keeps returning, or you cannot do daily tasks the way you used to, building strength is often the missing piece.
Problems that often respond well to physical therapy
- Back pain that comes back every few weeks or months
- Weak core or hip muscles that leave the lower back overloaded
- Recovery after a sprain, strain or sports injury
- Trouble with stairs, lifting, balance or long walks
- Rehab after surgery, following your surgeon's guidelines
Physical therapy asks more of you. Exercises are done in the clinic and at home, and results depend on doing them consistently. Patients who stick with it end up with a body that handles daily stress better.
Which one fits your problem: a quick guide
Every case is different, but these are the patterns we see most often in patients from Ives Estates, Aventura and the rest of North Miami-Dade.
Back or neck pain that started recently
Start with chiropractic care. Restoring movement early often calms pain faster. Add simple exercises as soon as the pain allows.
Sciatica
It depends on the cause. When a disc is involved, a mix of chiropractic care, spinal decompression and targeted exercise is common. If you notice weakness in your leg or foot, get evaluated promptly, because that changes the plan.
Auto injury
Usually both. Chiropractic care and Laser Therapy help with early pain and stiffness after whiplash, and strengthening work helps prevent lingering neck problems. In Florida, PIP insurance generally requires that you seek care within 14 days of the accident, so do not wait to see if the pain goes away on its own.
Long-term or recurring pain
Lean toward physical therapy, with chiropractic visits for flare-ups. Pain that keeps coming back is often a strength and movement problem, not only a joint problem.
After surgery
Physical therapy leads. Adjustments near a surgical site should wait until your surgeon clears you.
Why combining both often works best
Many patients do not fit neatly into one category. Take a common case: low back pain after a car accident. The joints are stiff and sore, the muscles around them are guarding, and weeks of reduced activity have left the core weaker than before.
Treating only one part leaves the other untouched. Adjustments without strengthening can bring relief that fades. Exercise without first easing the pain can be hard to tolerate, so patients stop doing it.
When both happen under one roof, the plan can change as you improve. Early visits usually focus on pain relief and movement. Later visits shift toward strength and preventing the next flare-up. You also avoid driving between two offices and repeating your history to two different providers.
Not sure which one you need?
Book an evaluation and we will tell you honestly whether chiropractic care, physical therapy or both make sense for your problem.
When neither is the right first step
Most back and neck pain is mechanical and responds to conservative care. Some symptoms point to something else, and then the right move is a medical doctor or the emergency room, not a chiropractor or physical therapist.
Go to the ER or call 911 if you have
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Sudden, severe weakness in a leg or arm
- Back or neck pain after a serious fall or crash, before imaging rules out a fracture
- Chest pain, shortness of breath, or pain spreading to the jaw or arm
See your doctor first if you have
- Back pain with fever, unexplained weight loss or a history of cancer
- Severe pain at night that does not change with position
- Known severe osteoporosis, a recent fracture or a bleeding disorder
Spinal adjustments are not right for everyone. If you have advanced osteoporosis, an unstable spine or certain blood vessel conditions, we will use gentler options or refer you elsewhere. If your exam shows something outside our scope, we will tell you and point you to the right specialist.
What happens at your first visit
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your pain: when it began, what makes it better or worse, and what you need to get back to doing. Then comes a physical exam that checks posture, movement, strength, reflexes and nerve function.
If imaging is needed, we explain why. If it is not, we do not order it. Before any treatment starts, you will hear what we think is causing the problem and which approach we recommend: chiropractic care, physical therapy or a combination.
Our chiropractor is bilingual, so you can describe your symptoms in English or Spanish. The clinic is at 1001 Ives Dairy Rd in Miami, near Aventura, with a free parking lot. Walk-ins are welcome.
Frequently Asked Questions
No. Chiropractors in Florida can see you directly without a referral. Some insurance plans have their own rules, so call us and we will help you check what applies to your plan.
Yes, and for many problems that works well. Chiropractic care eases pain and restores movement while physical therapy builds the strength to keep it. Having both in one clinic keeps the plan coordinated.
It depends on the cause. Sciatica from a disc problem often responds to a mix of chiropractic care, spinal decompression and exercise. Leg weakness or numbness that is getting worse needs prompt evaluation.
Get checked soon, ideally by a provider who can evaluate both joint and muscle injuries. Florida PIP generally requires care within 14 days of the accident. Many auto injury patients benefit from chiropractic care plus strengthening.
It depends on your condition, how long you have had it and how your body responds. After your exam we will give you a plan and adjust it based on your progress, not a fixed number of visits.
Most patients feel pressure and then relief. Some feel mild soreness for a day, similar to after exercise. If you prefer not to be adjusted, there are gentler techniques we can use.
Not usually. But see a doctor or go to the ER first if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, sudden weakness, fever, unexplained weight loss or pain after a serious fall.
No, we do not accept Medicare or Medicaid. Call us to ask about other payment and insurance options before your visit.
Yes, walk-ins are welcome. Booking ahead online is the best way to keep your wait short.
