Your first chiropractor visit is mostly a conversation and an exam. You fill out a short health history, talk through your pain, and go through simple movement and nerve tests. X-rays are taken only if your history or exam calls for them, and you are adjusted the same day only when it is safe and you agree to it.
Before You Arrive: Paperwork and What to Bring
You can book ahead or walk in. Either way, the first step is intake paperwork. It asks where you hurt, when it started, what makes it better or worse, and what you have already tried. It also covers your general health, medications, past surgeries and any accidents.
What to bring
- A photo ID, and your insurance card if you plan to use insurance
- A list of the medications and supplements you take
- Any X-ray, MRI or CT reports you already have, plus the images if you can get them
- After a car accident: your claim number, your auto insurer's details and any police or ER paperwork
Wear clothes you can move in. Athletic wear or loose pants work well. You will not be asked to do anything strenuous, but the doctor will want to see how you bend, turn and walk.
If you are more comfortable in Spanish, say so. The team is bilingual and so is the doctor, so you can describe your symptoms in whichever language feels natural.
The Intake Conversation: Your Story Comes First
Before anyone touches your spine, Dr. Loucil sits down with you and goes over your history. This is the most useful part of the visit. The way your pain behaves tells a chiropractor more than any single test.
Expect questions like these:
- Where exactly is the pain, and does it travel into an arm or leg?
- Is it sharp, dull or burning, or is it more like numbness or tingling?
- Is it worse in the morning, after sitting, or at the end of the day?
- Did it start with a specific event, such as a lift, a fall or a car accident?
- Have you noticed weakness, trouble walking, or changes in bladder or bowel control?
That last question can feel personal. It is asked because a small number of back problems need a hospital, not a chiropractor, and the answer changes what happens next. Answer honestly. Nothing you say will be judged.
This is also your chance to ask questions. If you are nervous about being adjusted, mention it now. It is a very common worry, and it shapes how the rest of the visit goes.
The Physical Exam: What the Doctor Checks
The exam is hands-on but gentle, and you stay clothed for it. The goal is to find where the problem is coming from and to rule out anything that needs a different kind of care.
Posture and movement
You may be asked to stand, bend forward and back, turn your head, and tilt side to side. The doctor watches for stiffness, guarding, and the exact movement that brings on your pain.
Orthopedic and neurological tests
These are simple checks. Raising your straight leg while you lie on your back can show whether a nerve in the low back is irritated, which is common with sciatica. The doctor may also test your reflexes with a small hammer, check your strength by having you push against light resistance, and test how well you feel light touch in your arms or legs.
Palpation
The doctor presses along your spine and the muscles around it to find tender spots, tight muscles, and joints that are not moving well. Say so if anything is too much. Pressure can always be lighter.
None of these tests should hurt more than your pain already does. If a movement brings on your usual pain, that is useful information, and the test stops there.
X-Rays: Only When They Would Change the Plan
Many first-timers assume they will be X-rayed automatically. You will not. Imaging is used when your history or exam suggests it could change which treatment is safe or appropriate.
X-rays are more likely if you have:
- A recent car accident, fall or other trauma
- Pain that has not improved over several weeks
- Known or suspected osteoporosis, or a history of fractures
- Exam findings that do not fit a simple muscle or joint problem
- New back or neck pain at an older age
If you already have recent imaging from another provider, bring it. It may mean you do not need new X-rays at all. When X-rays are needed, they are digital, taken in the office, and reviewed with you so you can see what the doctor sees.
If the exam points to something X-rays cannot show, such as a disc pressing on a nerve, the doctor may refer you for an MRI instead.
Will You Get Adjusted on the First Visit?
Often, yes. Not always. Whether you are treated the same day depends on what the exam finds and on whether you want to go ahead.
If your history and exam point to a joint or muscle problem with no warning signs, and you are comfortable, treatment can start that day. If X-rays are needed first, or the findings call for caution, treatment may wait until your next visit. That is not a delay for its own sake. It is the safer order of things.
What an adjustment feels like
An adjustment is a quick, controlled movement of a joint. You may hear a pop. That sound is gas releasing from the fluid inside the joint, not bones cracking. Most people feel pressure, then relief or looseness. Before anything happens, the doctor tells you what they are about to do and where.
You can say no
If you are not ready for a manual adjustment, say so. There are gentler options, including slower mobilization, soft tissue work, and depending on your case, spinal decompression, Laser Therapy or physical therapy exercises. You stay in control of what happens to your body at every visit.

When a Chiropractor Is Not the Right First Stop
Chiropractic care helps many kinds of back and neck pain, but it is not right for every person or every situation. A good chiropractor will tell you when you belong somewhere else. These are the signs to know.
Go to the emergency room instead if you have
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Leg weakness that is getting worse quickly, or trouble standing or walking
- Back pain with fever, chills or feeling generally unwell
- Sudden severe neck pain with a headache unlike any you have had, or with dizziness, slurred speech, vision changes or trouble swallowing
- Pain after a serious fall or crash where a fracture is possible and you have not been checked yet
Talk with your medical doctor first if you have
- A history of cancer and new back pain
- Unexplained weight loss along with your pain
- Pain at night that does not ease when you change position
- Severe osteoporosis
- A bleeding disorder, or you take blood thinners
- Spine surgery in the recent past
Some of these do not rule out chiropractic care. They mean the plan has to change, or your medical doctor needs to be involved. If anything in your history or exam raises concern, Dr. Loucil will tell you plainly and refer you, rather than treat something that should be looked at elsewhere.
After the First Visit: Soreness, Your Plan and Next Steps
Before you leave, the doctor explains what they found in plain language, what they recommend, and how often they suggest you come back. You should leave knowing what is likely causing your pain, or what still needs to be checked.
Some mild soreness the next day is normal, a lot like how muscles feel after a workout you are not used to. It usually fades within a day or two. Drink water, stay gently active, and use ice on any spot that feels irritated. If your pain gets clearly worse or new symptoms appear, call the office.
Your plan may include
- Chiropractic adjustments for joints that are not moving well
- Spinal decompression for some disc-related back pain, neck pain and sciatica
- Laser Therapy to support soft tissue recovery
- Physical therapy exercises to build strength and help keep the problem from coming back
- Simple changes at home or work, such as how you sit, sleep or lift
After a car accident
If you were in an auto accident, come in soon, even if you only feel a little sore. Whiplash and other injuries can take time to show up. In Florida, PIP coverage generally requires that you get initial treatment within 14 days of the accident. Bring your claim information to the first visit so the paperwork is handled from the start.
Common Questions About Your First Visit
Longer than a regular follow-up, because it includes paperwork, a full history and an exam. If X-rays are needed, that adds time. Plan your day so you are not rushed. Follow-up visits are much shorter.
No. You can book directly or walk in. Some insurance plans have their own referral rules, so check with your plan if you are using insurance.
Most people feel pressure and then relief. Some feel mild soreness for a day or two afterward. If you are already in a lot of pain, the doctor uses gentler techniques. Say so if anything feels like too much.
Only if your history or exam calls for them, for example after a car accident, a fall, or pain that has not improved over several weeks. If you have recent imaging from another provider, bring it.
Often, yes, if the exam shows no warning signs and you are comfortable going ahead. If X-rays are needed first or something calls for caution, treatment starts at the next visit. You can always decline an adjustment.
Comfortable clothes you can bend and turn in, such as athletic wear or loose pants. Skip belts with large buckles and anything tight around the waist or neck.
It is a good idea to get checked. Some injuries, like whiplash, take days to show up. In Florida, PIP coverage generally requires initial treatment within 14 days of the accident.
For many people, yes. The exam checks whether a nerve is irritated and how much. If you have worsening leg weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin, go to the emergency room instead.
No. The clinic does not accept Medicare or Medicaid. Call the office before your visit to ask about other payment options.
