The popping sound during a chiropractic adjustment is gas being released inside the joint, a process called joint cavitation. When the joint surfaces separate slightly, the pressure in the joint fluid drops and a small gas bubble forms quickly, which makes the sound. It is not your bones cracking, and it is not a measure of whether the adjustment worked.
What the popping sound actually is
Most joints in your spine sit inside a capsule filled with synovial fluid, a slippery liquid that lubricates and nourishes the joint. That fluid holds dissolved gases, mostly carbon dioxide and nitrogen, a bit like a sealed bottle of soda.
During an adjustment, the chiropractor applies a quick, controlled movement that separates the joint surfaces by a small amount. The space inside the capsule expands, the pressure in the fluid drops, and a gas bubble forms almost instantly. That rapid change is what you hear. The medical term is joint cavitation.
The same thing happens when you crack your knuckles. Nothing is breaking, grinding or snapping back into place. Your vertebrae are not going back in with a click, even though it can feel that way.
Why the same joint will not pop again right away
After a joint pops, the gas needs time to dissolve back into the fluid. Until it does, that joint usually will not make the sound again, even if it moves perfectly well. This is one reason a chiropractor does not keep working the same joint just to get a second pop.
The noise is not the goal
Many people judge an adjustment by how loud it was. That is understandable, but the sound tells you very little about whether the treatment helped. The purpose of an adjustment is to restore movement in a joint that is stiff or not moving well, and to calm the pain and muscle guarding around it.
A joint can start moving better without making any noise. A joint can also pop loudly and leave you feeling no different. What matters is how you move, how you feel in the days after, and whether your symptoms improve over a course of care.
Better signs that an adjustment helped
- Turning your head or bending forward feels easier
- Daily tasks like sitting, driving or lifting cause less pain
- The muscles around the area feel less tight
- Progress holds and builds over several visits, not just for an hour
If you hear a pop every time but none of these change, the plan should change. If you hear nothing at all but these improve, the treatment is doing its job.
Why some adjustments pop and others do not
Whether a joint cavitates depends on several things: the type of joint, how tight the surrounding muscles are, the angle and speed of the movement, and whether that joint has popped recently. Joints in the neck often pop easily. The lower back and pelvis sometimes stay quiet, especially when the muscles are tense and protecting the area.
You may also hear several pops in a single movement. That usually means neighboring joints cavitated at the same moment. It does not mean something went wrong.
Other joint sounds you might notice
Not every noise from a joint is cavitation. Tendons and ligaments can make a snapping sound as they slide over bone, and worn joint surfaces can produce a gritty, grinding feeling called crepitus. Painless noise during daily movement is common. Noise that comes with pain, swelling, locking or a joint giving way deserves an exam.
Is the popping sound harmful?
The sound itself is not a sign of damage. Cavitation is a normal physical process that happens in healthy joints. The research available so far has not shown that the pop from an adjustment, or from cracking your knuckles, causes arthritis.
Mild soreness after an adjustment is common, especially early in care. It usually feels like the ache after a workout and fades within a day or two. Sharp pain, new numbness or tingling, or pain that keeps getting worse is not expected. If that happens, call the clinic.
Cracking your own neck or back is a different matter. When you twist yourself to get a pop, the joints that move are usually the ones that are already loose, not the stiff ones causing the problem. Doing it many times a day can leave you chasing the same short relief without fixing the cause.
Gentle options if you do not like the sound
Some people tense up just thinking about the pop. That tension makes an adjustment harder, because tight muscles resist movement. The good news is that chiropractic care does not require the sound. Gentle approaches used in chiropractic include:
- Instrument-assisted adjusting: a small handheld tool delivers a light, quick impulse to one specific spot
- Drop-table techniques: a section of the table drops a short distance to assist the movement with less force
- Flexion-distraction: a slow, rhythmic stretch of the lower back on a specialized table
- Mobilization: gentle, repeated movements within a comfortable range, with no quick thrust
- Soft tissue work and stretching: relaxing the muscles around the joint so it can move more freely
Depending on your condition, a care plan may also include spinal decompression for some disc and sciatica cases, Laser Therapy, and physical therapy exercises. None of these depend on a popping sound.
Tell the chiropractor at your first visit if you do not want a manual adjustment or if the sound makes you nervous. That is a normal request, and your plan can be built around it. Each step is explained before it happens, in English or Spanish.

When chiropractic care is not the right choice
An adjustment is not right for every person or every problem. A careful chiropractor screens for warning signs before treating and refers you elsewhere when that is the better path.
Go to the emergency room or call 911 if you have
- Loss of bladder or bowel control, or numbness in the groin or inner thighs
- Weakness in an arm or leg that appears suddenly or keeps getting worse
- A sudden, severe headache unlike any you have had, especially with dizziness, vision changes, slurred speech or trouble walking
- Neck or back pain after a serious fall or car crash, before you have been checked for a fracture
- Back pain together with fever, chills or unexplained weight loss
Conditions that need a different approach or a medical evaluation first
- Severe osteoporosis or a known spinal fracture
- Spinal cord compression or an unstable spine
- Cancer that involves the spine
- Inflammatory arthritis during a flare, such as rheumatoid arthritis affecting the neck
- Blood thinners, which can rule out certain techniques
- Recent spinal surgery, unless your surgeon has cleared you
In some of these situations, gentle care without a thrust may still be possible once a physician has cleared you. In others, chiropractic care is simply not appropriate. Either way, you will get a straight answer about which applies to you.
What to expect at a visit near Aventura
Your first visit starts with a conversation about your symptoms and health history, followed by an exam of your posture, movement, reflexes and strength. If imaging is needed, you will hear why before anything is ordered.
Before any adjustment, the chiropractor explains what is planned and whether a pop is likely. You can say no to any technique at any point. Many patients find that simply knowing what the sound is helps them relax, and a relaxed body is easier to treat.
Loucil Chiropractic is at 1001 Ives Dairy Rd, Suite 206, Building 1, in Miami, in the Ives Estates area close to Aventura. There is a free parking lot, walk-ins are welcome, and your entire visit can be done in Spanish.
Common Questions About the Popping Sound
No. The sound comes from gas forming in the fluid inside the joint when the joint surfaces separate slightly. Your bones are not cracking, and nothing is snapping back into place.
Most people feel pressure and a quick movement, not pain. Some feel mild soreness for a day or two afterward, similar to after exercise. Sharp or worsening pain is not expected and you should report it.
A joint may not pop if the muscles around it are tense, if it popped recently, or because of the angle of the movement. The adjustment can still improve how the joint moves. The sound is not the goal.
Occasional self-cracking is not known to be dangerous, but it usually moves joints that are already loose rather than the stiff ones. If you feel the urge many times a day, that is a sign the real problem has not been addressed.
Yes. Gentle options such as instrument-assisted adjusting, drop-table techniques, flexion-distraction and mobilization do not rely on a pop. Tell the chiropractor at your first visit that you prefer a gentler approach.
Joints and muscles that have been stiff are being asked to move differently, and they can feel achy as they adapt. This usually fades within a day or two. Staying lightly active and drinking water often helps.
The research available so far has not shown that cracking your knuckles or the pop from an adjustment causes arthritis. Joint noise that comes with pain or swelling is different and should be examined.
For most people, neck adjustments are considered safe when done after a proper screening. Serious complications are rare. If you have a sudden severe headache, dizziness, vision changes or trouble speaking, seek emergency care instead. If you are uneasy, gentler neck techniques are available.
